Two-time Olympic gold-medalist and former ABL MVP Nikki McCray-Penson has died at the age of 49. McCray-Penson was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Rutgers last season and the school on Friday confirmed her death.

McCray-Penson won gold medals with the U.S. women’s basketball team at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. She joined Dawn Staley as an assistant coach at South Carolina from 2008-17. She also played in the ABL and won MVP honors in 1997 before heading over to the WNBA.

McCray-Penson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. She was a part of the 1996 U.S. women’s basketball team which sparked the formation of the WNBA and ABL.

McCray-Penson was a mentor to many young women throughout her career. She was known for her positive attitude and her ability to bring out the best in her players. She will be remembered for her passion for the game and her commitment to helping others.
