Tallahassee Classical School’s Principal Resigns After Controversy Over Art History Lesson

Tallahassee, Florida – Hope Carrasquilla, the former principal of Tallahassee Classical School, resigned this week after parents complained about a lesson on Michelangelo’s statue of David. The lesson was given to sixth graders, and school board chair Barney Bishop III told CNN that Carrasquilla did not follow procedure.

Carrasquilla offered her resignation to the school’s board after parents alleged that the images of the statue were “pornographic” and “unsuitable” for the school. She told CNN that things had been escalating over the past year and that she did not always follow every policy and procedure.

Due to this and other issues, Bishop said Carrasquilla was asked earlier this week to either resign or be terminated from her position. Carrasquilla said she was surprised by the reaction to the lesson, as the statue of David is one of the most famous and celebrated statues in the world.

The Tallahassee Classical School is a charter school that serves students in grades K-12. The school’s mission is to provide a rigorous classical education that emphasizes the liberal arts and sciences.

The school board has not yet named a replacement for Carrasquilla. In the meantime, the school is being overseen by the board and the school’s administrative staff. The board is also looking into the incident to determine if any further action is necessary.
