Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting death of Bishop David O’Connell, a longtime Catholic priest, as a homicide.

O’Connell, 69, had been a priest for 45 years and was originally from Ireland. He was found with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics in the 1500 block of Janlu Avenue in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Los Angeles religious community has been stunned by the death of O’Connell, who was hailed as a “peacemaker”. Detectives from the LASD Homicide Bureau are currently investigating the death, but it is too early to determine whether the bishop was targeted in the shooting or if his religion was a factor.

Angelus News, a Catholic news service, reported that O’Connell had hosted a community memorial service in Long Beach, California on November 14th.
