Former President Donald Trump has been ramping up his 2024 presidential campaign with a series of racist attacks against Elaine Chao, who served in his administration as U.S. Transportation Secretary. Trump has referred to Chao, who was born in Taiwan, as McConnell’s “China-loving wife,” among other derogatory terms.
On Monday, Trump baselessly suggested that Chao played a role in the classified documents recently found in President Joe Biden’s Delaware home and an office in Washington.
In response, Chao has spoken out against Trump, breaking her previous silence on the matter. She condemned Trump’s racist broadsides aimed at her and his other anti-Asian rhetoric.
Chao served as Transportation Secretary from 2017 to 2021, and is the first Asian American woman to serve in a President’s Cabinet in U.S. history. She is married to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who has drawn Trump’s ire since his public condemnation of Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
