Two musical acts initially announced as performers for the Great American State Fair, a 16-day event on the National Mall celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, have confirmed they will not participate. Morris Day and The Time and rapper Young MC both indicated through social media posts that they would not perform despite being listed on the official lineup.
Morris Day posted on Facebook, “Contrary To Rumor, Morris Day & The Time Will Not Be Performing At The ‘GREAT AMERICAN STATE FAIR.’ It’s A No For Me.” Young MC wrote on Facebook that he had informed his agents he would not perform at the event. He added that the artists were never told about any political involvement with the event and expressed hope to perform in D.C. in the future at an event that is not politically charged.
Freedom 250, the nonprofit organizing the event, described itself as a nonpartisan group dedicated to uniting Americans around the nation’s 250th anniversary. Spokesperson Rachel Reisner said, “Freedom 250 is focused on our signature celebrations and events that honor our history and engage all Americans — welcoming all who share our goal of commemorating this milestone in a way that uplifts and unites America.”
The initial lineup announced by Freedom 250 included a diverse range of performers such as Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, Martina McBride, The Commodores, C+C Music Factory, and Bret Michaels. Vanilla Ice’s management confirmed he remains contracted and will perform on June 26. The event is scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10 and will feature state and territory showcases, a 110-foot Ferris wheel, discussions led by CEOs and innovators, and special screenings of the films “National Treasure” and its sequel.
President Donald Trump has supported the broader 250th anniversary celebrations and created a task force to coordinate related events. The White House said those events will include an Indycar street race around the National Mall and an Ultimate Fighting Championship fight at the White House.
Freedom 250 commissioners include members of both Republican and Democratic parties, and the organization describes itself as nonpartisan.
There was some confusion over the inclusion of Milli Vanilli in the lineup, as one half of the duo, Rob Pilatus, passed away in 1998, while Fab Morvan remains alive. CBS News and NBC News have reached out to other listed artists for confirmation of their participation.
