Jake Reiner, son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, opened up on Friday about the profound grief he has faced since his parents were found dead in their Los Angeles home last December. In a detailed post on Substack, Jake described the moment he learned of their deaths while attending a celebration of life for a friend. His sister, Romy, first called to say their father had died, and moments later, she informed him their mother was also gone.

“My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance,” Jake wrote. “The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to figure out what the hell just happened.”

Rob Reiner, 78, known for directing films such as “Stand by Me” and “When Harry Met Sally…,” and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, a photographer and film producer, were found with stab wounds in their Brentwood home on December 14. Paramedics discovered their bodies after responding to a call. On the same day, their middle son, Nick Reiner, was arrested about 15 miles from the home and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder, including special allegations of multiple murders and use of a deadly weapon. Nick has pleaded not guilty.

Jake described the loss as “too devastating to comprehend,” saying he still wakes up each day trying to convince himself it is not a dream. “This truly is my living nightmare,” he wrote. He reflected on the many milestones his parents will miss, including his wedding and the birth of his future child. “It simultaneously breaks my heart and enrages me,” he said.

He also expressed sorrow over the fear his parents must have felt during the attack, emphasizing that they were “the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them.” Jake called his parents the “center of his life,” “guiding lights,” and “the foundation of who I am as a human being.” He praised their unconditional love for him and his siblings.

Though Jake did not name his brother in the post, he acknowledged the difficulty of losing both parents simultaneously and having a brother at the center of the tragedy. “It’s almost too impossible to process,” he wrote. He noted that while some questions about the incident will be answered over time, other details belong solely to the family and must remain private to protect what little remains.

Jake concluded with a plea for understanding and compassion, asking for “the same principles my parents lived by.” He also mentioned that his sister Romy would share her own reflections in due course.
