Tesla, the electric car maker owned by Elon Musk, is facing a lawsuit from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for allegedly violating federal law by tolerating widespread and ongoing racial harassment of its Black employees.

According to the EEOC’s complaint, White employees at Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California, have been hurling racist slurs at Black co-workers for at least eight years, and the company has failed to take action to stop it. The lawsuit claims that non-Black offenders have been using slurs and epithets openly in high-traffic work areas around or on the vehicle production lines.

The EEOC also alleges that the racial harassment has created a hostile work environment dating back to May 2015, with Black employees regularly hearing their colleagues use words like “monkey,” “boy,” or even the N-word to address them. In addition, the EEOC claims that Black employees have encountered displays of racist graffiti.

Tesla has not yet commented on the lawsuit. The EEOC is seeking back pay, compensatory damages, and punitive damages for the affected employees, as well as an injunction to prevent future discrimination and harassment. The lawsuit is a reminder that companies must take steps to ensure that all employees are treated with respect and dignity in the workplace.
