Legendary singer Steve Harwell, former lead singer of the band Smash Mouth, has died at the age of 53. Harwell had been in hospice care and passed away peacefully at his home in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by family and friends.

Robert Hayes, the band’s manager, confirmed the news to Rolling Stone on Monday. Harwell had been battling medical issues for several years.

Hayes said of Harwell, “Steve’s iconic voice is one of the most recognizable voices from his generation.” He added, “He was surrounded by family and friends and passed peacefully and comfortably.”
