Key takeaways:

  • More than 100 of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ former clerks signed a letter defending his “integrity” and “independence” in response to media reports.
  • The signatories argued that the reports are part of a “larger attack on the Court” and its “legitimacy.”
  • The letter does not address John C. Eastman’s involvement, who is accused of undermining the core of American democracy.

More than 100 of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ former clerks have signed onto a letter defending the justice’s “integrity” and “independence” in response to recent media reports on him unethically accepting luxurious gifts from billionaire donors and people with business before the high court.

The signatories argued that the reports are part of a “larger attack on the Court” and its “legitimacy.” Among the 112 signees are high profile circuit court judges like David Stras of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, Jim Ho of the 5th Circuit and Allison Rushing of the 4th (all Trump appointees).

However, one individual whose integrity has been drawn into serious question is also among the signees: John C. Eastman. Eastman is accused of undermining the core of American democracy — free and fair elections — by scheming to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. He is now officially criminally indicted in Georgia for his efforts.

The letter, which was published by Fox News this Tuesday afternoon, does not address Eastman’s involvement in the letter. Instead, it focuses on defending Justice Thomas’ “integrity, character and ethics.”

The letter comes at a time when the Supreme Court is facing intense scrutiny over its decisions and its legitimacy. It remains to be seen if the letter will have any effect on the public’s perception of the court and its justices.
