Former Vice President Mike Pence publicly sided with 2020 Georgia poll workers on Wednesday, speaking out against former President Donald Trump’s claims that the election was stolen.
At the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Legislative Summit in Indianapolis, Pence said that “the Georgia election was not stolen and I had no right to overturn the election on Jan. 6.”
Pence’s comments come a day after prosecutors in Georgia indicted the former president and 18 others on charges they conspired to reverse Trump’s 2020 election defeat. Pence condemned Trump’s conduct amid his refusal to concede the 2020 election in the last days of his administration.
“It’s important that we hew to the first principles and that we tell the truth to the American people,” Pence said. “No one is above the law.”
Trump falsely claims that Pence had the power to halt the election’s certification. Pence stressed that although Trump “and all those implicated are entitled to due process,” he believes that “judgment about those days should be left to the American people and to history.”
