A nearly weeklong search for a convicted murderer who escaped from an Ohio prison ended Sunday when authorities confirmed that a body found floating in a Kentucky river is most likely the killer’s.

The body was recovered near Gillespie’s last known location in the Ohio River near Henderson, Kentucky, and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Henderson Police Chief Sean McKinney said Sunday.

The body was found by a boater who reported it in the Ohio River, which shares Kentucky’s northern border with Indiana and Ohio, McKinney said. Investigators believe the body had been in the water for “four to five days,” McKinney said.

“Today I believe we have closure to our five-day manhunt,” McKinney said during a news conference.

The body is believed to be that of Bradley Gillespie, 50, who escaped from an Ohio prison and was last seen near the banks of the waterway. Gillespie had been convicted of murder and was serving a life sentence.

The autopsy results are expected to be released later this week. Until then, authorities are not releasing any further information about the case.
