A 17-year-old boy from Chesapeake, Virginia, died on Saturday after being trapped under a collapsing dune at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Frisco, North Carolina. According to a National Park Service news release, friends and family of the teen called authorities around 2 p.m. after discovering him buried in “several feet of sand, apparently caused by portions of the adjacent dune collapsing” into a hole the teen had evidently entered in the back of dune area.

Seashore law enforcement rangers responded to a 911 call about a teenager trapped in a hole that was about a tenth of a mile east of an off-road vehicle ramp in Frisco. The hole had been dug in a back-dune area that was not visible from the beachfront, the park service said.

Rangers and other officials worked with the teenager’s relatives to try to free him from the sand, but were unsuccessful. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

David Hallac, the superintendent for the National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, shared a statement expressing his condolences to the family. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased,” Hallac said.

The National Park Service is currently investigating the incident. No further information is available at this time.
