On Monday, the Nashville Metro Council voted unanimously to reappoint Tennessee Democratic Rep. Justin Jones to the state House. The decision follows Jones’ expulsion from the House last Thursday by the Republican-led House for participating in a peaceful gun protest from the floor.

The protest was in response to the recent deadly shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, which killed three 9-year-olds and three adults. Jones was joined by his Democratic colleague, former Rep. Justin Pearson of Memphis, and Rep. Gloria Johnson, who did not lose her seat.

The lawmakers were accused by Republicans of breaking “several rules of decorum and procedure on the House floor.” Supporters of Jones gathered inside and outside the meeting room, singing and chanting in support of Jones.

Addie Brue, 16, and Madeline Lederman, 17, shouted “do something” as Rep. Jeremy Faison, Chairman of the House Republican Caucus, walked towards the House chamber doors at the State Capitol Building in Nashville on March 30.

The unanimous vote of the Nashville Metro Council to reappoint Jones to the state House is a sign of support for the young, Black men who were expelled from the House for peacefully protesting gun violence. It is a reminder that the voices of the people will not be silenced.
