Key takeaways:

  • Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis spoke at CPAC, offering a glimpse into the potential 2024 Republican nomination race.
  • Trump served up his usual rhetoric, while DeSantis took a more measured approach.
  • The CPAC speeches and “Face the Nation” broadcast are indicative of the current state of the Republican Party.

Former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday, offering a glimpse into the potential 2024 Republican nomination race. Trump served up his usual rhetoric, claiming to be the only one who could save the world from World War III and declaring himself to be “your retribution.”

DeSantis, on the other hand, took a more measured approach, focusing on the need to beat the Democrats, rout the media, and expose and appropriately deal with “RINOs” (Republicans in Name Only).

The CPAC speeches come as Congress scrambles to deal with rail safety and environmental concerns, following yet another Norfolk Southern train derailment in Ohio.

Meanwhile, this week on “Face the Nation,” former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Senator Joe Manchin, Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, and Republican Representative Brad Wenstrup of Ohio were all featured. The show was moderated by Margaret Brennan, and former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb was also a guest.

The CPAC speeches and “Face the Nation” broadcast are indicative of the current state of the Republican Party, as it struggles to define itself in the face of a growing list of issues on Capitol Hill. It remains to be seen how the 2024 Republican nomination race will play out, but Trump and DeSantis’s CPAC speeches have provided a glimpse into the potential future of the party.
