British police have discovered the remains of a 2-month-old baby in a wooded area near where Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were arrested earlier this week.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford of the Met’s East Area Command said in a statement on Wednesday that a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, had been on the run since early January, crisscrossing England and using large amounts of cash to stay off the grid. They were arrested earlier this week after police became concerned for the welfare of their child.

The couple had been covering their faces when near closed circuit cameras and moving frequently, often after dark. It is not yet known how the baby died or how long the body had been in the wooded area.

The investigation is ongoing and police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
