A former investigative journalist for ABC News has been arrested and charged with transporting images depicting the sexual abuse of children, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday.

James Gordon Meek, 53, of Arlington, Virginia, was taken into custody Tuesday night and faces a charge of transportation of child pornography, officials said. If convicted, Meek could face a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 20 years behind bars.

The investigation began in March 2021 when Dropbox filed a tip with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, claiming a user uploaded videos with its service that were later confirmed by law enforcement to contain child pornography.

In addition to the images, authorities also discovered multiple conversations in which “participants expressed enthusiasm for the sexual abuse of children,” according to court papers.

Meek had worked as an investigative journalist for ABC News since 2014, covering a wide range of topics, including the 2020 presidential election, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2020 presidential transition. He had previously worked as a reporter for the New York Daily News and the Associated Press.
