Adam Schiff Announces Senate Bid, Joining Crowded Democratic Primary Race for Dianne Feinstein’s Seat

California Representative Adam Schiff announced on Thursday that he will be running for Senate in 2024, joining what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary race for the seat currently held by Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Feinstein, 89, has not yet announced whether she plans to seek a sixth full term in the upcoming election, and has faced criticism over her fitness for the job. Schiff is the third prominent California Democrat to join the race, following fellow Representative Katie Porter who announced her bid earlier this month.

In a statement launching his campaign, Schiff said, “Our economy is simply not working for millions of Americans, who are working harder than ever just to get by. I hope to earn their votes and their trust. I look forward to campaigning hard in this race, meeting Californians where they are, and listening to what they want from their next Senator.”

Schiff is the current Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and has served in Congress since 2001. He is well-known for his role in the impeachment inquiry against former President Donald Trump.

The Democratic primary race for Feinstein’s seat is expected to be highly competitive. Other potential candidates include California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. It is unclear when Feinstein will make her decision on whether to run for reelection.
