Utah voters in the 2nd congressional district will decide between Republican Celeste Maloy and Democratic state Sen. Kathleen Riebe in a special election to replace former U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart. If elected, Maloy would become the first woman in Utah’s congressional delegation since 2019 and Riebe would be the first Democrat since 2011. The 435th member of the House will be determined by the election, with Maloy being the heavy favorite in the Republican-leaning district. Three people have died and one is critically injured after a shooting in Custer County, Colorado on Monday afternoon. The incident is believed to have been a property dispute between two parties, prompting the Custer County Sheriff's Office to issue a shelter-in-place order and a SWAT team to arrive. A manhunt is currently underway for the suspect, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office.
Representatives have been working to reach a temporary cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas in response to the Oct. 7 terror attack, which killed 1,200 people and saw Hamas seize hostages. The situation for more than 2 million civilians trapped in the enclave has become increasingly dire, with UNICEF reporting that 5,000 of the 13,000 killed in Gaza were children. A cease-fire agreement is close, however, details are still being negotiated in order to bring an end to the conflict.
On Monday, a Navy P-8A Poseidon surveillance plane overshot a runway while approaching Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii, with all nine people aboard the plane uninjured. Diane Dircks captured a photo of the plane in the water just offshore, reminiscent of the 2009 "Miracle on the Hudson". The Coast Guard responded to the incident, but rescue operations were quickly called off and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident.
On Monday night, a shooting at a Walmart in Beavercreek, Ohio left four people injured and the gunman dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The responding officers did not fire any shots, and the victims were taken to area hospitals. Beavercreek Police released a statement expressing their condolences and are asking anyone with information to contact them as they continue to investigate the incident.
