Key takeaways:
- Three people died in the Montreal shooting: a police officer, a civilian and the suspected attacker.
- Police warned of an “armed and dangerous” person in Côte-des-Neiges and urged residents to avoid the area or shelter in place.
- Police said a bystander was slightly injured and a long gun was seized as investigators searched for other possible victims.
A Montreal police officer, a civilian and a suspected attacker were killed Monday in a shooting that prompted an emergency police operation in the city’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, authorities said.
Police warned residents earlier in the day that an “armed and dangerous” person was in the area and told the public to avoid streets near Côte-des-Neiges, Highway 40 and Queen Mary. People already nearby were advised to shelter in place as officers responded.
Few details were immediately available about how the shooting began, and police did not clarify the exact location where it took place. Authorities said the situation was still unfolding Monday afternoon and that investigators were searching for other possible victims.
“A suspect has been neutralised. Two police officers and one citizen have been injured,” police said in a social media post during the operation. “The police operation is still underway. Continue to avoid the area.”
Police later said one officer had died in the line of duty. A civilian also was killed, according to Elizabeth Prass, a member of Parliament for the district of D’Arcy-McGee. The suspected attacker was also dead, police said.
“It is shocking to know that something like this can happen here in Côte-des-Neiges, but we must remain vigilant and follow police instructions while their operation is ongoing,” Prass said in a statement on X.
Video from the scene circulating online showed officers responding with guns drawn, and gunshots could be heard. Another video showed a person who appeared to be the suspect carrying a rifle, as well as an injured police officer.
During a news briefing Monday afternoon, police said a bystander had been slightly injured and that a long gun had been seized at the scene.
Authorities did not identify the officer, the civilian or the suspect. Police also did not say whether they were seeking any additional suspects, and no suspected motive had been revealed.
The investigation is ongoing.
