A 51-year-old man died Saturday night after falling from an elevated area inside Madison Square Garden during a concert by the rock band Goose, New York City police said.
Officers responding to a 911 call at about 9:51 p.m. found the man unconscious and unresponsive inside the midtown Manhattan arena with injuries indicating he had fallen from an elevated position, police said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have not released the man’s name. CBS News New York, citing police sources, reported that the man fell from the arena’s 300 level. The Guardian reported that it was not clear Sunday morning from what height he fell.
Goose, a Connecticut-based rock band, was performing Saturday night at the Garden as part of a two-night booking. The band said in a statement posted on social media that it was “deeply saddened and heartbroken to learn of the tragic event that occurred at tonight’s show.”
“We extend our deepest sympathy to everyone affected,” the band said. “Thank you to the emergency personnel and venue staff who stepped in with care and support.”
The fall occurred inside Madison Square Garden just before 10 p.m., according to police. The arena, often called the Garden, is one of New York City’s best-known concert and sports venues and also hosts political rallies at times.
Goose was scheduled to perform Sunday night in New York City at SummerStage in Central Park. CBS News New York said it had reached out to Madison Square Garden for a statement.
