Key takeaways:

  • A senior U.S. intelligence officer reported a 2025 helicopter encounter with orange orbs that matched fighter jets’ speed and flight path.
  • The Pentagon released 64 files including 51 videos, 7 audio recordings, and 6 PDFs documenting UFO sightings from the 1940s to 2025.
  • NASA astronaut audio from the 1960s describes particles outside spacecraft, later attributed to frozen condensation reflecting sunlight.

The Pentagon has released a new batch of 64 files related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), including a detailed 2025 account from a senior U.S. intelligence officer who described a close encounter with mysterious orange orbs. The documents, part of a second tranche ordered public by former President Donald Trump, include six PDFs, seven audio files, and 51 videos showing military footage of UAPs.

The intelligence officer’s report, written after a helicopter mission investigating strange “thuds” near a mountain range, describes seeing countless orange orbs swarming in all directions. Two large orbs flared up side by side near the helicopter, hovering just above the rotor disk. The officer noted the orbs were oval-shaped, orange with white or yellow centers, and emitted light in all directions. Fighter jets were called in, and the orbs reportedly matched their speed and flight path, appearing to chase the jets. “We were virtually speechless after these observations,” the officer wrote.

The files, released by the Office of the Directorate of National Intelligence and the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), span decades from the 1940s through six months ago. They include footage from military aircraft, audio recordings, and notes. The Pentagon cautioned that many materials lack a substantiated chain of custody and that the files are redacted to protect witnesses and sensitive information.

Among the videos is footage from 2023 showing a fast-moving object shot down over Lake Huron, an incident that followed heightened U.S. concerns after a Chinese spy balloon crossed the country. Some reports suggest the object might have been a hobbyist balloon. Other videos capture spherical, oblong, and cigar-shaped objects moving over land, water, and sea in locations including the U.S., Kabul, Syria, Kazakhstan, and Europe. One clip near Kazakhstan’s Karaganda International Airport shows a burst of oval-shaped white light, while another in Europe depicts an object that appears to stop and start as if controlled remotely.

Audio files include NASA pilot recordings from the 1960s and 1970s, such as Apollo 12 and Project Mercury missions. NASA astronaut Scott Carpenter described seeing particles moving randomly outside his spacecraft, likening them to snowflakes. NASA later attributed similar “fireflies” seen during Apollo missions to frozen condensation separating from the spacecraft, reflecting sunlight.

Historical documents in the release include a 1970 handwritten letter from a Los Alamos scientist describing green lights seen regularly between 1948 and 1951, and a 1972 report from a CIA officer in the Soviet Union who observed a green circle with concentric rings in the sky.

The Pentagon’s release follows a previous batch of UFO-related documents uploaded two weeks earlier, which included FBI case files, diplomatic cables, and NASA photos. The new files were made public in response to requests from House lawmakers and are available on the Pentagon’s UFO website. Despite the detailed accounts and footage, the government has not drawn conclusions about the origins of the phenomena or indicated any communication with extraterrestrial life, emphasizing that the materials should not be interpreted as definitive evidence.
