Rapper Rick Ross was arrested Thursday after a woman accused him of hitting her and restricting her breathing during an August altercation at his Miami Beach home, police said. His attorney denied the allegations, and NBC News reported that Ross has pleaded not guilty.
Ross, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts II, faces a felony charge of battery by strangulation and a misdemeanor battery charge. The 50-year-old surrendered to detectives at Miami Beach Police headquarters Thursday morning in connection with the alleged Aug. 28 incident at his Star Island residence.
According to a police affidavit, the woman said she and Ross had been in a relationship for about a year and were living together when the alleged assault took place. She told investigators Ross woke her that morning, angry that she had been tagged in an Instagram photo. She said he accused her of lying and slapped her across the face.
Later, the affidavit says, Ross accused her of having a romantic relationship with someone she described as a friend. The woman told police that, while she was in a bathroom, Ross struck her in the chest several times and twisted the collar of her hoodie, restricting her breathing. She said he then grabbed her ponytail, slammed her against a wall and hit her in the face, busting her lip.
According to CBS News, the affidavit also says Ross pushed the woman to the floor, turned on the shower and tried to spray her with the shower head. She eventually left the bathroom and retrieved her belongings after Ross left the residence, the affidavit says.
The woman reported the incident on Sept. 29, according to CBS News. Police said she gave detectives a sworn statement and timestamped photographs of her injuries. CBS News reported that investigators also reviewed home surveillance video they said showed a friend arriving to pick her up and being turned away.
“All I can say is that the allegations are false. He’s innocent. Everything is going to come out,” Ross’ attorney, Bradley Horenstein, told CBS News Miami. “We just ask that you allow the process to play out before rushing to judgment, because the truth will come in.”
At a Thursday bond hearing, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer said she had reviewed the arrest report and found probable cause, CBS News reported. The outlets reported different bond amounts: CBS News said Glazer set a total of $5,000, while NBC News cited online jail records showing a total of $6,000.
According to CBS News, Glazer ordered Ross to have no direct or indirect contact with the woman and to surrender any firearms or concealed weapons. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 22.
Ross broke through with the 2006 single “Hustlin’” and has received nine Grammy nominations, according to NBC News.
