An arrest warrant has been issued for Zymire Hughes, police announced Thursday. Authorities said they believe Hughes may have fled Pennsylvania and has ties to California and Nevada.
The incident involving the jogger unfolded around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday last week near 1500 John F. Kennedy Blvd., police said. The woman, 40, was wearing athletic clothing when she “was chased by a masked offender,” according to a police statement cited by NBC News.
Police told NBC Philadelphia that the masked man held up a phone and repeatedly asked the woman, “Are you ready to die?” Investigators said the person was wearing a “Chucky doll Halloween-style face mask,” a reference to the killer doll from the “Child’s Play” horror movie franchise.
CBS News reported that Hughes is accused of threatening and chasing at least a half dozen people around Philadelphia City Hall on Aug. 12. Police said he allegedly asked one woman whether she was “ready to die.”
Investigators released video and images of the masked person after the incident. NBC News reported that the person was carrying a distinctive blue plaid backpack and was last seen entering SEPTA’s Suburban Station.
Philadelphia police said Thursday that they are looking for Hughes. CBS News reported that police are working with the U.S. Marshals Service to bring him back to Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and other city officials were expected to share additional details about the case Thursday afternoon, according to CBS News.
