UK Revokes Visas of US Commentators Over Public Good Concerns

Key takeaways:

  • Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker were denied UK entry due to concerns their presence could harm public good.
  • Uygur described Israel's actions in Gaza as "barbaric," while Piker expressed political preference for Hamas over Israel.
  • The British Jewish charity Community Security Trust supported the visa revocations, while some activists criticized them as suppressing free speech.

The United Kingdom’s Home Office has revoked the visas of two American political commentators, Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker, preventing their entry ahead of scheduled appearances at the SXSW London festival. The government cited an assessment that their presence would be “not conducive to the public good.”

Cenk Uygur, co-creator of the Young Turks political talk show, announced on social media that he was banned from the UK after attempting to board a flight to London. “I’ve been banned for criticizing Israel. Are we free anymore? This is oppression of Western citizens by our own governments on behalf of a different country!” he wrote. Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer with over 1.6 million followers, confirmed that his UK entry clearance was also revoked, stating, “The UK has revoked my visa as well. All at the behest of Israel. The West is betraying ‘liberal values’ for a genocidal fascist foreign government. Soon we will all become Israel.”

The Home Office confirmed that the visa cancellations were based on an assessment of potential risks the individuals might pose to UK society. According to The Times, concerns included the possibility that their presence could exacerbate antisemitism in the UK.

Both commentators have made controversial statements regarding Israel and Hamas. Uygur has described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “barbaric.” Piker has stated he would “vote for Hamas over Israel every single time” and has said Hamas was “1,000 times better” than Israel. He has also described himself as “anti-Israel” and denied being antisemitic. Piker previously faced criticism for a 2019 comment that “America deserved 9/11,” which he later apologized for.

The British Jewish charity Community Security Trust welcomed the government’s decision, emphasizing that “there must be consequences when public figures cross the line into hate speech.” The group had raised concerns about Piker’s participation and called on SXSW London to “act responsibly.”

In contrast, British journalist Ash Sarhar, who was scheduled to chair a discussion with Piker, accused the government of acting out of “fear of being called antisemitic, and fear of being called out for their position on the genocidal war on Gaza.”

Labour Member of Parliament David Taylor praised the Home Office’s action, stating, “There is no reason to open our doors to those who seek to spread hate and division, especially to those who’ve supported a proscribed terror group.”

SXSW London organizers acknowledged the visa cancellations but emphasized that decisions on entry are the responsibility of the Home Office. They affirmed their commitment to hosting a diverse range of voices and continuing the event with over 800 speakers and artists. Organizers noted that remote participation by Uygur and Piker remains a possibility. The commentators can still submit visa applications for consideration, though it is unlikely these would be processed in time for the event.

The visa denials have sparked debate. Green Party leader Zack Polanski called the decision “a really grim decision,” warning it signals a move toward silencing criticism of the Israeli government. Liberty Human Rights director Akiko Hart criticized the government’s lack of transparency and stressed the importance of adhering to UK legal standards when restricting speech.

Earlier this year, the UK government also blocked rapper Kanye West from entering the country due to antisemitic and racist remarks, though this case was not explicitly linked to the current visa revocations.
