FDA Issues Voluntary Recall of Over 170,000 Bottles of Martinelli’s Apple Juice Due to Patulin Contamination Risk

In 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of more than 170,000 bottles of Martinelli’s Apple Juice due to potential contamination with patulin, a naturally occurring mycotoxin. This recall affects 10-ounce glass bottles packaged in 4-packs, which were produced in December 2023. The FDA’s routine testing revealed that one specific lot of these bottles might contain elevated levels of patulin, a substance produced by molds that can grow in apples.

Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by several fungal species and is known to pose health risks when consumed in significant quantities. The recall has been classified as Class II by the FDA, indicating that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. The probability of serious health consequences is considered remote under this classification.

The affected apple juice bottles are distinguished by their round glass design and white metal screw-top lids. These products were distributed across 28 states, ranging from Alabama to Wisconsin. Consumers in these states are advised to check their purchases and avoid consuming the recalled juice.

S. Martinelli & Company, the producer of the apple juice, is cooperating with the recall efforts to ensure consumer safety. The company has urged customers to return the affected products to the place of purchase for a refund. The FDA continues to monitor the situation and advises consumers to stay informed about the recall for any further updates.
