The shooting happened around 6:15 a.m. at South Orange Avenue and Camden Street, according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé. The imam was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition.

The person shot is an imam at the Masjid Muhammad-Newark, according to a city spokesperson. Police officers were seen posted outside the entrance to the mosque hours after the shooting.

The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-N.J.) said it is gathering information on the shooting and urged anyone with information to contact local police.

“We are deeply concerned about this incident and pray for the speedy recovery of the imam,” CAIR-N.J. said in a statement.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
