A Delta flight from Amsterdam to Detroit with 270 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing on Sunday at a remote Canadian military base in Goose Bay, Newfoundland. The airline said the plane experienced a mechanical issue and diverted to the airport out of an abundance of caution.

According to CBS News senior travel adviser Peter Greenberg, the airport is a Canadian Forces Base located in a small town, but has a long runway that made landing possible. Passenger Aditi Shankar told CBS News that airplane staff said the issue was related to deicing one of the plane’s engines.

The passengers were stuck in remote Canada for over 21 hours after the emergency landing. Delta provided the passengers with hotel rooms and meals, and arranged for a new plane to take them to their destination. However, the passengers were unable to resume their journey due to a staffing issue and were forced to stay overnight.

The airline said in a statement that it was “working diligently to get customers to their final destination as quickly as possible.” Delta apologized for the inconvenience and thanked the passengers for their patience. The passengers were finally able to take off on Monday afternoon and arrived in Detroit later that evening.
