Two Nevada state troopers were killed in a hit-and-run on a Las Vegas freeway Thursday morning while helping another driver, officials said.

The two troopers had stopped to check on a driver who was asleep behind the wheel on Interstate 15 around 3:30 a.m. when a white Chevrolet HHR struck them both, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. One of the troopers died at the scene and the other died at a hospital, Deputy Chief Branden Clarkson said.

“It’s a terrible, terrible tragedy to have these troopers lose their lives in the manner they did,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said.

Police found the vehicle that struck the troopers at an apartment complex at around 8 a.m., Clarkson said. A suspect was taken into custody hours after the crash, Las Vegas police said during an afternoon news conference.

The identities of the troopers and the suspect have not yet been released. The investigation is ongoing.

The Nevada Highway Patrol expressed its condolences to the families of the troopers in a statement.

“The Nevada Highway Patrol family is deeply saddened by the loss of two of our own,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time.”
