In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer was asked to address comments by Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani that Israel’s raid on Shifa Hospital was a “crime.” Finer did not directly answer the question, but noted that Shifa is the biggest hospital in Gaza and that several civilians took refuge there during the conflict.

On Sunday night, Israeli officials released images of what it said were Hamas fighters taking captured Israeli military vehicles to the hospital on the same day. Two of the clips show what Israel says are Hamas militants forcing hostages into the premises of Al-Shifa Hospital on the morning of the Oct. 7 terror attack. NBC News used archive photos to confirm that the first clip does show the reception area of the hospital.

The raid on Shifa Hospital resulted in hundreds of patients, including 31 premature babies, having to be evacuated from the facility. State-run media in Egypt reported on Monday that at least 28 of those babies had made it into the country.

The incident at Shifa Hospital has sparked a debate over whether Israel is breaking international law by targeting hospitals in Gaza in its effort to wipe out the Hamas militant group. Finer did not directly answer the question, but noted that several civilians took refuge at the hospital during the conflict. The Israeli government has yet to comment on the incident.
