Rep. Abigail Spanberger Announces Run for Governor of Virginia in 2025, Promising to Fight for the People of Virginia

U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) announced Monday that she will not seek reelection to her House seat next year and instead will run for governor of Virginia in 2025.

In a campaign video posted on the social media site X, Spanberger said that Virginia and the nation are facing “fundamental threats” to their rights, freedoms and democracy. She said that while some politicians in Richmond are focused on banning abortion and books, they are not helping people.

“What we need is a governor who will fight for the people of Virginia,” Spanberger said. “Someone who will stand up to extremists and protect our rights, our freedoms, and our democracy.”

Spanberger, a moderate former CIA agent, said she will focus on protecting women’s reproductive rights and ensuring that teachers and students are not used as “political pawns.” She also said she will prioritize helping people with their everyday needs, such as access to healthcare, education, and jobs.

“I’m running for governor because I believe that Virginians deserve a leader who will fight for them,” Spanberger said. “I’m ready to be that leader.”

Spanberger’s announcement comes as Virginia is in the midst of a heated political climate, with many issues such as abortion, gun control, and education reform being debated. Spanberger’s candidacy will likely add to the debate and further shape the political landscape in the state.
