Amid ongoing fighting in the Gaza Strip, Medical Aid for Palestinians has warned that babies in the neonatal unit at Al-Shifa Hospital cannot be safely moved. This comes as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have attacked two major hospitals in the region, Al-Shifa and Al-Quds, prompting more calls for a cease-fire.

The IDF has opened evacuation routes from Al-Shifa and two other hospitals, but the aid organization Medical Aid for Palestinians has said it is not possible to safely move babies from the facility. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least three babies and 10 others inside the hospital have died since the siege started on Saturday morning.

Al-Shifa, the Gaza Strip’s largest hospital, is without electricity and lacking vital resources as the IDF continues to bombard the facility. The IDF has claimed, without proof, that they are in search of Hamas militants. The European Union has joined the chorus of voices calling for a cease-fire, as the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.

The Israeli government has yet to respond to the calls for a cease-fire, and the situation in Gaza remains dire. The United Nations has warned that the situation is “rapidly deteriorating” and has urged all parties to take immediate action to protect civilians.
