Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under fire for his comments on Sunday that Palestinian civilians killed in the ongoing conflict with Hamas are simply “collateral damage”. The right-wing leader appeared on multiple cable news shows to discuss the month-long siege on Gaza, which human rights experts have warned amounts to ethnic cleansing and war crimes.

Netanyahu attempted to downplay both his responsibility in the deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israelis as well as his military’s role in killing Palestinians. Since the violence escalated on Oct. 7, more than 11,100 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

In an interview with President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, that aired on Nov. 12, 2023, Herzog discussed the devastating loss of 1,200 civilian citizens on October the seventh. He also addressed the intense fighting around Al-Shifa Hospital, which many believe to be Hamas’ command center.

When asked if taking control of the hospital would end the war, Herzog said, “The war we’ve taken on against Hamas is a war which matters to the entire well-being and safety of the country. We are doing our utmost to protect our citizens and to bring an end to the conflict.”

Herzog also expressed his condolences to those who have lost loved ones in the conflict, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life on both sides. We are doing everything we can to bring an end to this conflict and to ensure the safety of all civilians.”
