The White House has announced that Israel has agreed to implement four-hour daily humanitarian pauses in its assault on Hamas in northern Gaza, beginning Thursday. The Biden administration has also secured a second pathway for civilians to flee the fighting.

John Kirby, National Security Council spokesman, confirmed the four-hour daily pauses on Thursday morning. An Israeli official also confirmed the pauses, saying they are intended to allow people to move to the south of Gaza and obtain food and medicine.

Kirby also said that the first humanitarian pause will be announced Thursday and that the Israelis have committed to announcing each four-hour window at least three hours in advance. He added that the Israelis have informed the U.S. that there will be no military operations in those areas for the duration of the pauses.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s office has stated that there will be no ceasefire without the release of their hostages. Meanwhile, Palestinians have been fleeing to the southern Gaza Strip along Salah al-Din Street in Bureij, Gaza Strip.

The Biden administration has been working to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and the implementation of these four-hour humanitarian pauses is a step in the right direction. It is hoped that the pauses will provide much needed relief to civilians in the region.
