A Manhasset, New York man was arrested over the weekend after police said he pointed a gun at a 6-year-old boy who had mistakenly left Halloween treats on his porch.

According to Nassau County police, the 6-year-old boy and his family had mistaken Michael Yifan Wen’s Long Island home for a friend’s house and left a “boo basket” as part of a lighthearted Halloween trend. The 10-year-old sister of the 6-year-old had dropped off a goody bag for her friend when Wen allegedly pointed a gun at the 6-year-old.

Wen was arrested and charged with menacing and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, Nassau County police said in a statement.

The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many questioning why a gun was necessary in such a situation.

“It’s a 6-year-old child,” said Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. “It’s a Halloween prank. It’s a 6-year-old child. It’s a Halloween prank. It’s a 6-year-old child. It’s a Halloween prank.”

The incident has prompted calls for stricter gun control laws in the state of New York.

“This is a tragic reminder of how dangerous guns can be in the wrong hands,” said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. “We must take action to ensure that guns are not used to threaten or harm innocent children.”

Wen is currently being held in Nassau County jail and is due to appear in court on November 5th.
