Nassau County Republicans have selected Mazi Melesa Pilip, an Ethiopian immigrant and former paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, as their nominee for the upcoming special election to replace ousted GOP Rep. George Santos. Pilip will face former U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.), the Democratic nominee, in the Feb. 13 special election. Pilip has been endorsed by the Nassau County Republican Party and is seen as a competitive candidate in the race for the vacant seat in the House of Representatives.
Michael Yifan Wen, a Manhasset, New York man, was arrested and charged with menacing and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child after he allegedly pointed a gun at a 6-year-old boy who had mistakenly left Halloween treats on his porch. The incident has sparked outrage in the community and calls for stricter gun control laws in the state of New York. Wen is currently being held in Nassau County jail and is due to appear in court on November 5th.
After more than a decade of searching, a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the unsolved murders of at least 10 women whose bodies were found on Long Island's Gilgo Beach. The suspect is from Massapequa, and there is a large police presence in Massapequa Park. Eleven sets of remains have been found in the area, but it is unclear if the suspect is connected to all of them.
On Tuesday afternoon, a parking garage in New York City's Financial District collapsed, leaving one person dead and multiple people injured. Six workers were inside during the collapse, and four were taken to a hospital in stable condition. Local officials have expressed their support and are working to ensure that such an incident never happens again.
Rep. Anthony D'Esposito (R-NY) has announced that he would not support Rep. George Santos' (R-NY) potential candidacy in 2024, as federal and state investigators are probing Santos' role in the sale of a $19 million yacht involving two of his wealthy donors. Santos recently filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission signaling that he may be considering running for another term in Congress, but the Nassau County Republican Committee is not in support of his potential candidacy. It remains to be seen if Santos will decide to run for Congress again in 2024 and how the investigations into his finances will affect his campaign.
