Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday, challenging President Joe Biden for the nomination. In an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press NOW” host Kristen Welker, Phillips said he believes Biden cannot win the 2024 general election against former President Donald Trump.

“Right now, if this election was held today, President Biden would lose, and it is an existential threat to the future of the United States of America,” said Phillips. “Yes, we have some policy differences, but I’m a proud Democrat. I’m not running against Joe Biden, that will not happen under my watch.”

Phillips went on to criticize the cost of living in the U.S., saying that it is too high and that wages are not keeping up with inflation. He also said that he believes the Biden administration is not doing enough to address the issue.

Phillips is a distillery heir and one of Congress’ wealthiest members. He said that he is running for president because he believes Biden cannot win the election and that it is an “existential threat” to the future of the United States. He added that he is a proud Democrat and that he is not running against Biden.

The 2024 presidential election is still more than two years away, and it remains to be seen if Phillips will be able to gain enough support to challenge Biden for the Democratic nomination.
