Allen Weisselberg, former chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, testified in a civil trial in New York on Tuesday, accused of fraud connected with the former president’s financial statements. The lawsuit, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, also names Donald Trump, two of his sons, and the Trump Organization as defendants.

Weisselberg is expected to testify about his role in preparing Trump’s annual financial statements, including conversations he had with the former president while finalizing the documents. These statements were given to banks, insurers, and others to secure loans and make deals.

During the trial, Weisselberg replied with variations of “I don’t recall” to dozens of questions. He was also asked about his involvement in creating so-called statements of financial condition for Trump for years.

Weisselberg has been involved in the Trump Organization for decades, helping to stave off insolvency after casino bankruptcies and an airline failure in the 1990s. He recently served a jail stint for tax fraud. Trump will not attend the second week of the trial.

The outcome of the trial is yet to be determined. It is unclear what effect Weisselberg’s testimony will have on the case.
