Sir Michael Gambon, the beloved British-Irish actor known for his role as Professor Albus Dumbledore in the later Harry Potter movies, has died at the age of 82.
In a statement issued on behalf of his wife Lady Anne Gambon and his son Fergus, publicist Clair Dobbs said the family was “devastated to announce the loss,” and added that the “beloved husband and father” had died peacefully in a hospital with his wife and son by his side following a bout of pneumonia.
Gambon won four U.K. television BAFTAs during his decades-long acting career, which saw him take staring roles across television, movies, radio and on the stage. He was best known for his role as Professor Albus Dumbledore in the six later Harry Potter movies, starting with “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” in 2004.
The statement issued on behalf of his family said, “We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
Gambon’s agent, Sally Long-Innes, said in a statement, “Michael was one of the great actors of his generation. He was a brilliant actor and a wonderful man. We will miss him greatly.”
