Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) announced Saturday that he plans to challenge Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) for his Senate seat in the upcoming election. This comes after Menendez was charged with bribery in a recent indictment filed in Manhattan federal court.

Kim expressed his desire to run for the Senate in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, asking for donations. He wrote, “Not something I expected to do, but NJ deserves better.”

Menendez and his wife Nadine were indicted Friday, accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from roughly 2018. In response to calls for him to resign, Menendez said “I am not going anywhere.”

Kim was joined by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Democratic state committee chairman LeRoy J. Jones Jr. in calling for Menendez to step down. Kim said, “We cannot jeopardize the Senate or compromise our integrity.”

The election for the New Jersey Senate seat will take place in November 2020. Kim is the first to announce his candidacy, and it is unclear if Menendez will seek re-election. If Menendez does not run, it is likely that more candidates will enter the race.
