A former Philadelphia police officer has been charged with murder, aggravated assault and other offenses in the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Eddie Irizarry last month. District Attorney Larry Krasner announced the charges on Friday, accompanied by Assistant District Attorneys Lyandra Retacco and Karima Yelverton.

Krasner played body camera videos from the officer, Mark Dial, and his partner that showed Irizarry’s final moments. The videos show Dial and his partner pull up in a police vehicle next to Irizarry, who had parked on the 100 block of West Loudon Street. Seconds after pulling up, Dial fatally shot Irizarry.

Krasner described the footage as “extremely difficult to watch.” Dial, a five-year veteran, was fired from the Philadelphia Police Department after security video showed him shooting Irizarry. Dial turned himself in to the police South Detectives division Friday morning.

Irizarry’s death sparked outrage in the city, with many calling for justice and an end to police brutality. Krasner said the investigation into Irizarry’s death was conducted with “the utmost seriousness and care.” He added that the charges were the result of a thorough review of the evidence.

The investigation into Irizarry’s death is ongoing. Krasner said he will continue to seek justice for Irizarry and his family.
