On Wednesday, Spanish soccer player Jenni Hermoso accused Luis Rubiales, the now-suspended president of the Spanish soccer federation, of sexual assault. The accusation stems from an incident that occurred during the medal ceremony of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 Final match between Spain and England at Stadium Australia on August 20, 2023 in Sydney, Australia.

During the awards ceremony, Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips without her consent. Hermoso has since filed a complaint with the country’s prosecutors’ office, alleging that the kiss was an act of sexual assault.

Rubiales has since been suspended from his role as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. In a statement, the Federation said that it “deeply regrets the incident and is committed to ensuring that all athletes are treated with respect and dignity.”

The incident has sparked a larger conversation about the prevalence of sexual assault in the sports world. In a statement, Hermoso said that she hopes her story will “help to raise awareness of the importance of respecting the physical and emotional integrity of athletes.”

The Spanish prosecutors’ office is currently investigating the incident and has yet to make a decision on whether or not to press charges against Rubiales.
