Three Alabama men have been charged with misdemeanor assault after a brawl broke out on the Montgomery Riverfront on Saturday evening. The incident began when a riverboat, The Harriott II, attempted to dock in its usual spot but was blocked by a pontoon boat. Damien Pickett, the co-captain of The Harriott II, left the ship to speak to the owners of the private boat directly on the dock.
Montgomery Police Chief Darryl J. Albert announced assault charges against Richard Roberts, 48; Allen Todd, 23; and Zachery Shipman, 25. The riverboat, which was carrying more than 200 passengers, waited nearly 40 minutes for the smaller boat to move.
At a news conference Tuesday, Chief Albert said one of the men is in custody and the other two other were expected to turn themselves in to police Tuesday afternoon. All three men have been charged with third-degree assault. When asked if the situation constituted a hate crime, Albert added “Based on the elements of this crime, those elements did not support a hate crime.”
The incident is still under investigation and it is unclear what led to the altercation. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Montgomery Police Department.
