Republican Presidential Candidates Take Stance on Justice Department Investigations into Former President Donald Trump

The Republican presidential field is growing as candidates vie to push the party past former President Donald Trump. In response to the Justice Department’s investigations into Trump, who has been twice impeached and now twice indicted, several candidates have spoken out.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, and several lower-tier candidates have criticized the Justice Department for its investigations into Trump. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy tweeted that Joe Biden had kept classified documents for decades, and that he and other Americans who believe in the rule of law stand with Trump against this “grave injustice”.

Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson also denounced Trump’s actions, emphasizing that the former president should end his campaign. He said that Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, but that the ongoing criminal proceedings will be a major distraction.

Other prominent Republicans, such as former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, have remained silent or said they are waiting for more information to be released.

The Republican presidential field is becoming increasingly crowded as candidates seek to move the party away from Trump’s legacy. As the Justice Department continues its investigations into Trump, the candidates’ reactions will be closely watched.
