Rep. George Santos, a Republican from New York, has been charged with federal offenses, four sources familiar with the matter have confirmed to NBC News. The exact nature of the alleged criminal violations is currently unclear.

CNN was the first to report that federal prosecutors filed charges against the first-term lawmaker. Santos was elected to New York’s 3rd Congressional District last November, but has spent much of his time in Congress under scrutiny by state and federal prosecutors, following revelations he fabricated aspects of his background.

Two sources confirmed to CBS News that Santos could surrender at the federal courthouse in the Eastern District of New York in the morning, and is expected to make a court appearance on Wednesday afternoon.

The FBI is also probing Santos’ alleged role in purporting to raise funds for a veteran’s dying dog through a pet charity. The New York Republican, who faced legal and political pressure to resign from Congress after he admitted to lying about parts of his background, is the subject of multiple investigations into other matters.

Santos has not yet commented on the charges. It is unclear what penalties he may face if convicted.
