Judge Denies Tory Lanez’s Motion for New Trial, Sentencing Hearing Scheduled for April 23

Rapper Tory Lanez has been denied a motion for a new trial by a Los Angeles judge on Tuesday. Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was convicted of three felonies in December for shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the feet and wounding her.

The convictions include assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Lanez’s lawyers argued that evidence was wrongly admitted at the trial, but Judge Herriford rejected the argument, saying that the exclusion of the disputed evidence would not have made a difference at the trial.

Lanez is now facing sentencing for the convictions. The maximum sentence for the charges is 22 years and 8 months in state prison. However, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has said that it will not seek the maximum sentence.

The shooting occurred on July 12, 2020, when Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion were in an SUV in the Hollywood Hills. Lanez was arrested at the scene and charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Megan Thee Stallion was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to her feet.

The case has been closely watched by the public, with many people calling for Lanez to be held accountable for his actions. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 23, 2021.
