A mass shooting at a Texas outlet mall over the weekend left eight people dead and six more injured, authorities said Monday. The victims of the tragedy, which occurred at Allen Premium Outlets, 25 miles north of Dallas, included two elementary school-aged sisters, a couple and their 3-year-old son, a young engineer with a master’s degree, and a security guard who worked at the mall.

The two sisters, who were remembered as “the kindest, most thoughtful students with smiles that could light up any room” by their school principal, were among the youngest victims of the shooting. The couple and their son were also killed, leaving their other son orphaned.

The shooting also claimed the lives of three members of a Korean American family, a couple and one of their sons.

The 33-year-old gunman, who was later killed by police, opened fire at the mall on Sunday afternoon. The tragedy has left the community in shock, as the victims represented a multicultural cross-section of the area’s increasingly diverse suburbs.

“Our hearts are broken for the families of the victims,” said Allen Mayor Stephen Terrell in a statement. “We are a close-knit community and this tragedy has left us all in shock. We are doing all we can to support the families and our community during this difficult time.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The motive of the gunman remains unknown.
