The United States has denied any involvement in a purported drone attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a statement from the National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, John Kirby. The attack, which was said to have been orchestrated by Ukraine, was vehemently denied by both Kyiv and Washington.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for Putin, had accused the U.S. of being “undoubtedly” responsible for what Moscow has described as a “terrorist attack.” In response, Kirby stated that “Mr. Peskov is lying.”

Former intelligence officers, diplomats, military officials and analysts have expressed strong skepticism about Russia’s narrative, but said it was too early to draw conclusions about the incident. Unnamed U.S. officials have stated that they are working to determine whether the attack was orchestrated by Kyiv or a pro-Ukraine rogue group, or whether it was a false flag operation by the Kremlin.

NBC News has viewed two videos filmed from the same perspective, which appear to show two objects flying over the Kremlin approximately 15 minutes apart. The second object seems to strike the building causing a small fire.

Kirby has dismissed the claim as “ludicrous” and assured the public that the United States is not involved in the incident. The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
