A seventh-grader in Michigan is being praised for his quick thinking after taking control of a school bus when the driver lost consciousness.

On Wednesday afternoon, the student was riding home from Carter Middle School in Warren, Michigan when the bus driver “became lightheaded and lost consciousness” while driving on Masonic Boulevard near Bunert Road. According to Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent Robert Livernois, the student “saw the driver in distress, stepped to the front of the bus and helped bring it to a stop without incident.”

The police and fire departments responded to the scene and treated the driver, who was later taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. The bus was then taken to the school district’s transportation center for inspection.

The student, who has not been publicly identified, is being praised for his quick thinking and bravery. “We are extremely proud of our student for his quick thinking and willingness to help in a time of need,” Livernois said. “His actions exemplify the character of our students and the Warren Consolidated Schools community.”
