At least one person has been confirmed dead and three others are critically injured after a shooting outside of a funeral home in northeastern Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, according to Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee.

The shooting occurred on a sidewalk outside of Stewart Funeral Home, where a funeral service had taken place earlier that morning. Contee said a police officer was stationed near the funeral home when the gunfire broke out around 12:30 p.m.

The victim’s family had asked police to have officers near the funeral, Contee said. He added that “people were milling about” in the minutes following the service.

Preliminary evidence suggested that the shooting was not random, Contee said. Investigators are still collecting evidence from the scene and have yet to identify a suspect in connection with the mass shooting.

The three injured individuals were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

The Metropolitan Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.
