Billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch, 92, has announced his engagement to former San Francisco police Chaplain Ann Lesley Smith, 66. The News Corp. founder proposed with an Asscher-cut diamond solitaire in New York on St. Patrick’s Day, citing his “one-fourth Irish” heritage.

Murdoch told the New York Post that he met Smith in September, when she visited his vineyard, the Moraga Estate, in Bel Air, California. Smith, the widow of country singer Chester Smith, told the Post that she and Murdoch “share the same beliefs.”

In an interview with gossip columnist Cindy Adams, Murdoch said he “dreaded falling in love – but I knew this would be my last.” Smith echoed his sentiment, saying “I was very nervous,” but added that “I’m happy.”

The couple’s whirlwind romance has been met with support from their families and friends. Murdoch, who has been married four times before, said he is looking forward to the future with Smith.

Murdoch and Smith’s engagement marks the fifth marriage for the media mogul. No date has been set for the wedding.
